Overview
Embark on a scenic drive through the Great Rift Valley to Falls Camp, followed by a midnight climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai. Enjoy sunrise views, visit Lake Natron and a Massai village, then return to Arusha with stops for Makonde carvings and Meserani Snake Park.
Tour Plan
Begin the adventure by driving towards Mto Wa Mbu, entering the expansive Great Rift Valley. Travel via the Engaruaka basin, transitioning into a hot, wild, and dusty semi-desert area. Observe the extinct volcanoes Kitumbene and Gelai to the right, and keep Ol Doinyo Lengai, the revered "Mountain of God," constantly in view. Arrive around midday at Falls Camp on the Engaresero riverbanks, a perfect spot for a refreshing shower, river bath, or a trek to hidden waterfalls. Rest and prepare for a midnight drive to start the ascent of Lengai, with the possibility of witnessing glowing lava at the peak.
Enjoy the stunning sunrise and expansive views up the Rift Valley, extending into Kenya. Begin the descent around lunchtime, then head towards Lake Natron, a significant Flamingo breeding ground in East Africa. En-route, explore a traditional Massai “Boma” village before returning and spending the night at Falls Camp.
Travel back to Arusha, planning for an overnight stay at the lodge. Make stops along the way to purchase the renowned Makonde carvings. For those interested, visit Meserani Snake Park to observe various snakes rarely seen in the wild.
